Overzicht

Nha Trang is Vietnam's premier beach resort city, centered on a sweeping 6km crescent of golden sand framed by green mountains and dotted with offshore islands. Located in Khanh Hoa Province on the south-central coast, the city has a population of roughly 500,000 and has been a popular beach destination since the French colonial era. The clear, warm waters of Nha Trang Bay are home to some of Vietnam's best coral reefs, making it the country's diving capital. Beyond the beach, the city has genuine historical depth: the Po Nagar Cham Towers, built between the 7th and 12th centuries, are among the best-preserved Cham religious sites in Vietnam. The Long Son Pagoda with its massive white Buddha sits atop a hill overlooking the city. In recent years, Nha Trang has seen rapid development with large-scale resort projects, amusement parks, and a growing Russian and Chinese tourist presence that has reshaped parts of the city center. Despite this, the beachfront remains beautiful, the seafood is excellent and affordable, and the surrounding islands offer pristine escapes from the resort strip.

Must-Do Ervaringen

De leukste dingen om te doen in Nha Trang

1

Go island hopping in Nha Trang Bay

The classic Nha Trang experience: a day boat trip visiting several of the bay's islands. Popular stops include Hon Mun (best snorkeling, part of the marine protected area), Hon Tam (beach resort island), and Hon Mot. Group tours cost from 250,000-400,000 VND ($10-16) including lunch, snorkeling gear, and onboard entertainment. Private speedboat charters offer a more exclusive experience.

2

Scuba dive at Hon Mun Marine Protected Area

Nha Trang is Vietnam's diving capital, with the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area offering the best visibility and coral coverage. Sites like Madonna Rock, Moray Beach, and Electric Nose feature hard and soft corals, reef fish, moray eels, and occasionally seahorses. Two-dive trips start from $60-80 with PADI-certified operators. Visibility is best from March to September (15-30 meters).

3

Visit the Po Nagar Cham Towers

This atmospheric complex of Hindu temples was built between the 7th and 12th centuries by the Cham civilization and remains an active place of worship. The main tower, dedicated to the goddess Po Nagar (a local form of the Hindu deity Uma), still receives offerings from both Cham and Vietnamese devotees. The hilltop location offers panoramic views over the Cai River and city. Admission: 22,000 VND ($0.90).

4

Soak in hot mineral mud at Thap Ba or I-Resort

Nha Trang's famous mineral mud baths are genuinely rejuvenating and unique to the area. Thap Ba Hot Springs (the original, established 2003) and the newer I-Resort offer communal or private mud bath pools, mineral hot springs, swimming pools, and waterpark features. A private mud bath for two costs approximately 300,000-500,000 VND ($12-20) per person. The experience takes 2-3 hours.

5

Watch the sunrise from the beach promenade

Nha Trang's east-facing beach catches spectacular sunrises over the offshore islands. Join the locals at 5:30-6:00am for a morning walk, jog, or tai chi session along Tran Phu Boulevard. The light hitting the mountains behind the city while the bay glows orange is unforgettable. The beach is at its quietest and most beautiful at dawn.

6

Feast on seafood at the local restaurants behind Dam Market

Skip the tourist-priced beachfront restaurants and head to the streets around Dam Market or the seafood strip near Nguyen Binh Khiem Street where locals eat. Point-and-cook seafood restaurants let you choose fresh fish, crab, squid, and shellfish from tanks, then have them prepared to your liking. A generous seafood dinner for two costs 300,000-500,000 VND ($12-20) at local prices.

Nha Trang Railway Station (Ga Nha Trang) is conveniently located in the city center on Thai Nguyen Street. The Reunification Express stops here on its Hanoi-HCMC route. Journey times: Ho Chi Minh City (7-9 hours), Da Nang (8-11 hours), Hue (11-14 hours). The overnight sleeper from HCMC is a popular option.

Per Bus

Long-distance buses arrive at the Phia Nam (Southern) bus station. Sleeper buses connect to Ho Chi Minh City (8-9 hours), Da Lat (4 hours), Mui Ne (5-6 hours), and Da Nang (10-12 hours). Reputable operators include Phuong Trang (FUTA) and The Sinh Tourist. Open-tour bus tickets from HCMC to Hanoi typically include a Nha Trang stop.

Rondreizen

The beachfront and city center are walkable, though the linear layout means distances can be longer than expected. Grab is the most convenient transport option. Local buses run along Tran Phu Boulevard. Bicycle rental is available (50,000-80,000 VND/day) and works well for the flat coastal area. Motorbike rental costs 100,000-150,000 VND/day. Doc Let Beach

50km north, approximately 1 hour by car

A quieter, more pristine alternative to Nha Trang's city beach. Doc Let (also called Bai Doc Let) has fine white sand, clear water, and a handful of low-key resorts and beachside restaurants. The nearby Ninh Hoa salt fields add a cultural dimension to the trip.

Yang Bay Waterfalls

45km west, approximately 1 hour by car

A series of waterfalls in the foothills of the Truong Son mountains, set in a park with swimming areas, hot springs, cultural shows by the Raglai ethnic minority, and animal encounters. A scenic escape from the beach scene. Entrance: 100,000 VND ($4).

Ninh Van Bay

60km north, approximately 1.5 hours by car plus boat

A spectacular secluded bay accessible only by boat, surrounded by dramatic boulders and lush mountains. Home to the Six Senses Ninh Van Bay resort, but the bay can also be explored independently by hiring a boat from the mainland pier.

Veiligheid

Nha Trang is generally safe but has more petty crime reports than smaller Vietnamese cities due to its resort-town nature. Watch for bag snatching, especially on the beach promenade at night. Be cautious with belongings on the beach — theft from unattended bags is reported. Avoid accepting drugs from street touts on Bui Vien or in nightlife areas — drug penalties in Vietnam are severe. Swimming safety is important: pay attention to beach flags, as currents can be strong, especially during the wet season. When booking island tours, choose established operators to ensure boat safety standards.

Lokale Tips

Insider advies voor een bezoek aan Nha Trang

  • 1For the best diving conditions, visit between March and September when visibility can reach 30 meters and the seas are calmest.
  • 2The beachfront seafood restaurants along Tran Phu are significantly overpriced — locals eat at the seafood joints on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street or near the fishing port.
  • 3Visit Po Nagar Cham Towers early in the morning (open from 6am) to experience the site in peaceful solitude before tour buses arrive at 9am.
  • 4The area around Nguyen Thien Thuat Street has the best concentration of budget accommodation and independent restaurants.
  • 5For a more exclusive island experience, skip the crowded group boat tours and hire a private speedboat to Hon Mun or the less-visited islands.
  • 6The luxury Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, accessible only by speedboat and set in a stunning private bay, offers day passes for non-guests — an unforgettable splurge.
